Rasha Nahas' debut album ‘Desert’ is an intricate collage, documenting a journey from Palestine to Germany, from the personal to the political – and back.

Poetic vocalization, evocative, delicate passages of guitar and wailing violins, Rasha’s work is awash with sweeping orchestration that slips effortlessly in and out of the spellbinding musical overtones of her native Middle East.

Written during a period of transition, Rasha describes it as a 'a chronicle of moments, when realizations rise from the depths to the surface, like tiny floods. I moved to Germany to allow myself to explore my identity. The record represents both the emptiness of the void and the complexity in between for me. It is the thirst, solitude, community, the mirage, the encounters along the way, the baggage, feelings of longing, and the idea of belonging to yourself or to something bigger"

Nahas moves between dramatic gestures and abstract lyrics, to very personal, intimate and filterless musical expressions.

"‘Desert’ navigates the gulf between the theatrical and the personal, between metaphor and raw storytelling. It evokes countless sentiments that define themselves and thrive in opposition to one another – arrival and departure, distortion and clarity, doubt and certainty."

One of the main goals of the album was to capture that live feeling. Rasha recorded together with her band in the same room, with some songs coming together in just one take. The recording bristles with unfixed, dynamic, performative, raw qualities. Guitars floating suspended in the air, strings howling, playfully woven between the different contours of rock and profound storytelling. Between distorted allegories and picturesque panoramas wrapped in lucid lyrics.
It’s all a journey... a Desert.
